Wooden housing estate Muttimatte, Brügg

The Muttimatte housing estate for communal living in the second half of life in Brügg is largely made of wood. This makes the settlement of the Biel-based housing cooperative biwog one of the largest timber construction projects in the region at present.
The project
The "Hausgemeinschaft 2. Lebenshälfte Muttimatte" aims to enable people over 60 to live a community-oriented, self-determined and individual lifestyle. The residents of the settlement in Brügg near Biel should be able to live independently in their own living environment for as long as possible. The 27 apartments have 2.5 to 3.5 rooms and are between 46 m2 and 75 m2 in size. All areas are threshold-free and wheelchair-accessible.
The construction
The basement including the parking garage, the stairwell and the elevator shaft are made of solid construction. The 3 upper floors are mainly made of wood: load-bearing exterior walls, floor slabs and the roof. The floor slabs are constructed with box girder elements and reinforced with steel beams. The reason for this is the non-load-bearing interior walls, built using lightweight construction methods. They can be moved as required if people want to change the layout of their home.
The challenge
On the first floor of the buildings, the generously proportioned and projecting flower windows are striking. The residents should be able to sit on the ledges. The projecting windows therefore placed special demands on the statics. The challenge was to transfer the loads of the projecting windows into the wall.

Lignum Holzbulletin 138/2021 Wohnen im Alter – In the immediate vicinity of the center of Brügg, the Bieler housing cooperative BIWOG has built three houses with a total of 27 apartments for senior citizens. The architectural concept of Muttimatte cleverly combines private and communal spaces to encourage encounters between residents and guests both inside and outside. Living in the Second Half of Life
Wir Holzbauer 5.2018 - The Muttimatte housing estate in Brügg near Biel offers living space for people over 60. 27 apartments with 2.5 to 3.5 rooms, which offer a home to up to 33 residents, are located in the three buildings of the "Muttimatte House Community 2nd Half of Life". The apartments are spacious and light-flooded and were designed according to the guidelines of age-appropriate living. This means that all areas have no thresholds and are wheelchair-accessible. For "Wir Holzbauer", the settlement represents a special feature in the greater Biel area. Apart from the basement floors and stairwells, the three buildings of the settlement were completely constructed in wood; Timbatec was responsible for the timber construction planning for the project. The article describes in detail which types of wood have been used in the construction of the settlement and what measures have been taken to ensure noise protection and insulation in the mat.
We rely on timber
bauRundschau 2/17 - In earlier centuries, timber as a building material was a matter of course in cities. In the 20th century, however, timber largely disappeared from urban space. In 1993, the first three-story timber buildings were still considered pioneering achievements. A lot has changed since then: Today, 100 meter high timber buildings are already being built in urban centers and timber is used in a wide variety of construction projects. The "bauRundschau" uses five groundbreaking projects to show just how diverse the building material timber is used today. Among other things, the trade magazine presents projects in which Timbatec was or still is significantly involved, including the "sue & til" residential development in Winterthur, the Arborea residential building in Köniz and a new viewing platform in Basel Zoo.
